Es un mineral de color azul verdoso compuesto de fosfato de aluminio y cobre. Ha sido muy apreciada como piedra preciosa y ornamental durante miles de años. Fue portada por faraones y reyes aztecas, por lo tanto se considera una de las piedras preciosas más antiguas.
Se dice que la palabra turquesa surge de una confusión, ya que en Turquía no hay turquesas, pero eran comercializadas allí, y entonces la gema fue asociada con aquel país.
